Airtel, Vodafone Introduce e-KYC for Instant SIM Activation With Aadhar Verification

Airtel, Vodafone Introduce e-KYC for Instant SIM Activation With Aadhar Verification

Country’s two leading mobile operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are rolling out e-KYC service at their stores to help customers activate new SIMs instantly with Aadhaar number verification.

While Airtel has rolled out the service at its stores in Delhi-NCR, Vodafone is launching the facility across India from August 24. Airtel had 25.4 crore subscribers while Vodafone had a base of 19.8 crore users as on May 2016, according to the Trai data.

“Customers walking in for a new connection at our stores will walk out talking in just a few minutes. We had partnered with the Department of Telecom (DoT) to pilot the Aadhaar based e-KYC solution and tested it successfully in two circles,” Vodafone India Director (commercial) Sandeep Kataria said in a statement.

“Effective Wednesday, August 24, we are rolling it out across the country,” Kataria said. Airtel said the solution – currently live at its Delhi NCR stores – would be available at company-operated stores across the country over the next few days.

The e-KYC facility would shortly also be extended to those stores which are not directly operated by the company, a Bharti Airtel spokesperson said. Mobile customers opting for electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification just need to know their Aadhaar number, which along with their fingerprint, will be good enough for confirmation for both new pre-paid and post-paid connections.

In contrast to existing document-based process, the move is intended to cut down time for SIM activation as customer verification is done instantly.

BSNL Launches Unlimited 3G Mobile Data Plan

BSNL Launches Unlimited 3G Mobile Data Plan for Rs. 1,099
  • BSNL added most number of subscribers in April
  • Doubled data usage in Rs. 549 plan for 3G service to 10GB from 5GB
  • Doubled 3G data usage in Rs. 156 plan to 2GB, valid for 10 days

To counter competitors, state-run BSNL on Wednesday announced a national unlimited 3G mobile data plan for Rs. 1,099 and doubled the data usage limit in some existing plans.

“Due to improvement in network, BSNL has been gaining customers. We are now first in the industry to offer unlimited 3G plan for Rs. 1,099 without reduction in speed. This will rejoice [sic] our customers and help them experience improved BSNL networks,” BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava said.

BSNL added most number of subscribers in April for a third month in a row, as per data released by telecom regulator Trai.

Growth in mobile segment in April was led by BSNL which added 11.39 lakh subscribers followed by Bharti Airtel (9.78 lakh), Aircel (5.72 lakh), Reliance Communications (1.1 lakh), Vodafone (46,600), Quadrant (Videocon Group – 25,012) and MTNL (11,591).

To counter private telecom operators’ strategy of slashing data rates by up to 67 percent, BSNL has doubled data usage in Rs. 549 plan for 3G service to 10GB from 5GB.

“The plan has validity of 30 days and is equivalent to 100 percent increase in data benefits to subscribers,” Mr Shrivastava said.

The telecom firm has doubled 3G data usage in Rs. 156 plan to 2GB which will be valid for 10 days.

“Last year, BSNL had also facilitated the customer by offering 80 percent cheaper voice tariff. By massive reduction in data tariff and introduction of unlimited data STVs (Special Tariff Vouchers), BSNL hopes to serve data customers, mainly the youth segment in a much better way,” BSNL Board Director (CM) RK Mittal said.

In July, private telecom majors – Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea – increased data usage limit in some of their 3G/ 4G plans by up to 67 percent to counter threat from Reliance Jio which is offering 90 days free unlimited data and phone call service.

Idea Cellular Denies Report on Merger Talks With Vodafone

Idea Cellular Denies Report on Merger Talks With Vodafone

India’s No. 3 mobile phone carrier, Idea Cellular, strongly denied a news report on Tuesday that it was in exploratory talks about a merger with larger rival Vodafone India.

A spokeswoman for Idea’s parent, conglomerate Aditya Birla, called the CNBC TV18 report of talks between Idea and Vodafone “baseless and absolutely false”.

“This is absolutely untrue and preposterous,” she said in an email. “There is no such intent.”

Shares in Idea closed 6.9 percent higher on Tuesday after the TV channel said the two sides were in talks, citing unnamed sources.

A spokesman for Vodafone India, India’s No. 2 operator by market share and the local arm of Britain’s Vodafone Group Plc, declined to comment on the report.

India is the world’s second-biggest mobile phone market by subscriptions, behind China, but high competition in the crowded market has kept profits under pressure.

Adding to the competition, Reliance Jio – a telecom venture backed by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani – is set to launch commercial operations in the coming months.

“Both of them are struggling with their data revenue market share and ahead of a big competitive change in the industry they might want to get bigger,” IDFC securities analyst Abhishek Gupta said of Idea and Vodafone India.

Any such deal would also face tough regulatory scrutiny and analysts say approvals would be unlikely, as the companies would breach the 50 percent revenue market share limit in many regions of the country if they did try to merge.

“It’s very unlikely,” PhillipCapital (India) analyst Naveen Kulkarni said, citing the regulatory hurdles.

“I’m doubtful whether this can go through but there could be some other form of merger, such as spectrum-sharing deals,” he added.
